It's books like this one that make me grateful for my Kindle and for the miracle of epublishing. This short book was written by a grandmother and dedicated to her granddaughter. She traces the tragedies and triumphs of her life, starting with her hardscrabble childhood at the ironically named Paradise Hill, Michigan.The oldest child of a large farm family, her childhood was scarred by her mother's mental illness and her father's cold, angry nature. School (when she was able to attend) was a refuge. In her teens, with her mother finally released from a mental hospital (although not cured) she was able to escape to relatives in San Francisco.
She dreamed of being a nurse, but a wise old RN insisted that she go to medical school. "Then YOU'LL be in charge." Today nurse practitioners operate independently and in hospitals RNs are respected partners in health care decisions. Back then, they took temps and gave bed baths and kept their mouths shut.
Her father's reaction to her decision to attend college was predictable. "Girls don't go to college. It's a waste of time." And when she persisted, "Don't expect a damned penny from me." Sadly, this angry man never lost his anger or acknowledged his daughter's achievements.
Margaret was able to escape from him by going to college. Her mother used the only method open to her and her death left a legacy of shame and guilt that her children are still dealing with.
I've read hundreds of memoirs, but never one that was more fascinating and memorable than this one. It's significant that the author once won a local beauty contest. When her mother asked her what she did for the talent competition, she answered that she told stories about her life on the farm. No wonder she won! She's a born story-teller. This book is one that I'll be thinking about for a long time.

Wow, this is a powerful story. Margaret Fletcher depicts her early life in prose that is scrubbed clean to a state of humility, simplicity and purity. But knowing that this story is a love letter to her granddaughter, I read so many layers of personal history, strong emotion and sheer determination into the telling. We should all be grateful to Dr. Fletcher for pushing through the doors that are now open to women today, but also for sharing how much she had to personally overcome to do so. Her book gives me a great sense of inspiration and hope.
This story is about how a young girl took her life into her own hands. She decided what she wanted and went for it. It shows what a person can do in spite of the difficulty they have been dealt. It is truly amazing how the author shows her granddaughter that she can accomplish anything she wants from life.
Margaret Fletcher's memoir will surely touch your heart. It is written as a love letter to her granddaughter and has a reply from her granddaughter at the end. This beautiful memoir can and will remind us all of what truly matters in our life. What made this book special to me is that I was born and raised in Michigan. Many of the places the author mentions are very familiar to me. Even right down to department stores in Detroit. I recommend this book because of its open and honest dealings with this mystery called life.
