A Work in The Guy Series

Henry Clueley doesn’t want to be in Glamour, not after moving far away to overcome a difficult, if privileged, childhood. He’s no longer that pudgy kid desperate to escape his hometown, but it still holds painful memories. When his recently widowed mother needs him, however, “dependable Henry” does the right thing—even if it means leaving the IRS to take a boring corporate position. Things don't stay boring for long. Soon Henry helps the local sheriff’s department unravel a crime. Posing as half of a fake couple seems like a fun idea... until Henry learns he already knows the deputy playing his other half.

Deputy Locke may be new to the Glamour Sheriff’s Department, but he’s fought his way up in the world and is determined to make a good impression. He keeps his private life quiet, even from his beloved younger brother. Locke knows better than most the need to protect what’s his.

Henry resents the arrogant, gorgeous cop, and Locke thinks Henry is sheltered and spoiled. Their secret and steamy encounter only adds to the animosity. As they join forces, Henry thinks a relationship with Locke would be catastrophic, but the white-hot passion between them makes it hard to resist.

Looking at the outside, people are tempted to envy Henry his circumstances. But his childhood has been anything but.
Henry is still quite shy, despite his years away. Now back home, he discovers irregularities in the firm he works for. He consents to helping the police with their investigation, but unfortunately his partner proves to be officer Locke.

A man Henry is attracted to, actually they had a sexual encounter in a wedding their both attended, but Locke is very reluctant to do more than just a one-night hookup. He has not even told his younger brother that he is gay!

To unravel the crime and personal relationship simultaneously proves to be challenging. Locke's hesitation almost costs him a good man's love.

I liked the book, but I have to admit I prefer the previous one.

The Last Guy Breathing The Guy Series Book 3 edition by Skylar M Cates Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I found this one the least enjoyable of the series so far.
The reason for this is on Locke. For the first half I the book I seriously disliked him. In the first book Dean was gruff but had a heart of gold, Locke is also gruff but the heart of gold didn't come through in the first half. He was rude and mean to Henry I seriously wondered how Henry kept going back.
In the last part of the book Locke redeemed himself and showed chinks in his armour and this helped but it was hard work getting to that point for me
I've read all of the books in the "Guy" series. This is a great addition that takes us back to that little imaginary town of Glamour. We meet Henry and Locke, along with a few familiar characters from the first book in the series. The story moves along quickly and has an exciting plot the kept me turning pages. These stories can be formulaic but you aren't reading them for originality...right? I really enjoyed this installment in the series and highly recommend this one. Oh and on th plus side the sex scenes at pretty zesty too! Well worth the purchase.
What a great book. This story has everything I want to read, runs me through so many emotions and gives me what's want in a good storytelling. Excitement, love, suspense, a bit of danger and sexiness ). I've followed the Guy series through all the books and this is by far my favorite story. I've loved Henry's character since he was first introduced and Locke was a great partner for him. The push, the pull of these two was great even though it put me thru the emotional ringer. I loved that I got to see my two other favorite characters Anthony and Dean, and seeing Gina finally happy as well was heartwarming. I would have loved to see Aaron and Jesse again though.
However, the ending was something special, very sweet and fulfilling. Well done Ms. Cates
I am posting the exact same review for each of the three books in this series for the following reason

Rarely if ever have I been diverted from reading in the manner that I am accustomed, i.e., hopping back and forth between three or four books of different genres when I need a break from the one I'm currently lapping up.

But I was so caught up with "The Guy From Glamour" that I had to go onto both "The Only Guy" and "The Last Guy Breathing" almost as soon as I put each one down.

My heartfelt advice is for you to do the same. Read the outlines of each book, cock an eyebrow like I did, and plunge in. This is what m/m romance is all about, and I defy you to keep a still heart or a dry eye, in any of them.
1.5 disappointed stars rounded up to 2.0

Sadly, I'm in the minority here. Many of my GR buddies liked this book best in The Guy series but I felt just the opposite!

First off, I really like The Guy series. I also enjoy Skylar Cates' writing. My qualms with this book can be summed up in one word Locke. I didn't like him at all. Maybe it's because I've dated his type, you know the I'm-aloof-and-rude-but-it's-a-defense-mechanism-to-protect-myself-so-cut-me-some-slack. We make excuses for them, as Cate did for Locke, that they are simply softies on the inside and misunderstood. Pffffft. Puh-leeze. I beg to differ. They are pricks and are hurtful. When your prickiness eclipses your hawtness, as it did in Locke's case, I am thoroughly disenchanted. Although I truly liked Henry's character, his inability to stand up to Lock left him wanting in my book.

Bottom line I like this series but not this installment.
I'd say probably more like 2.5 stars. I'm disappointed in this book. I really enjoyed the first two, but this was just seemed so contrived to me. It was kind of all over the place, with a lot of little things that on their own wouldn't be a big deal but put all together added up to a lot of eye rolling on my part. I really wanted to like this book. I mostly liked the characters, but by the end of the book it just seemed to be a lot of drama just for drama's sake. Rather than have the two MC's off licking their wounds and beating themselves up over how incapable they are of having relationships, why not keep them together and let us watch them figure it out together? I don't know, I just really don't like unnecessary drama for drama's sake, and this book seemed to be full of it.

there was a lot of steamy parts that were good, but overall I just couldn't get into it.
3.5 Stars

I am very much enjoying this series. We Met Henry in earlier books and it is nice to see him get his happily ever after.

Locke is a bit of a jerk. He stays pretty locked down and judgemental for a bit too long. Henry also assumes too much.

But the pretend romance is fun and the lack of drama around it turning into more is nice. I like watching Henry become more of who he is and Locke taking emotionial risks.

A nice read.
